2009 USA Tour : March 12th, from Perry Fl to New Orleans

On the road to the coast

At Perry KAO Kampground we awoke to a beautiful warm sunny day and decided not to move until around 2:00 pm. The jolly camp manager extended us from the 11:00 am check out limit without hesitation.

Perry KAO Kampground was quite jolly and quite a busy place. Only 2 sites spare the night we were there. Sites were very close to each other but had easy accessed power, water and sewerage. WiFi was reliable and fast. Staff very helpful and informative and a very useful little shop. It was good this was good as its was the most expensive site on our tour. I believe we got good value in service alone.

When we set off the day was perfect, sunny, 75 F, light breeze and not humid. It did not take long before we were driving in what must be some of the most beautiful landscape in Florida, mainly due to very little development. We were heading along the coastal route to Panama Beach and then Pensacola. The beaches were fascinating with pure white sand and stumps of ancient trees rising through the sand and through the sea edge too.

St. George’s Island

I cannot recall where the nearest town is or even what time we arrived, but this was a moment of welcome heaven. St George’s island is connected by a fascinating 5 mile causeway and bridges. When you arrive on the island the welcoming village is like an old style seaside resort. Travelling east you end up in the state park and its beautiful wilderness. Here we stayed for lunch, walk on the beach, paddle in the sea and a rest.

Preparing lunch in the camper RV was fun as we have lots of healthy, and treat goodies, on board. The beach was stunning, the purest white sand like fine castor sugar and very blue sea. A lot of seabirds here. We enjoyed watching the pelicans hunt and dive, but it was difficult to photo or video this so we have no scenes to share.

We stayed until past 6:00 pm, and then we were reminded of the reality of the long drive ahead of us.

To New Orleans

I cannot remember the distance but it was our first very long drive and much of it in darkness. It was a pleasant sunset drive to Panama Beach, and then through darkness it seems to be an endless condo and fast food chain strip for what seemed at least 150 miles to Pensacola. From Pensacola we were on the I10 freeway to New Orleans then over what seemed like a sci-fi network of flyovers for miles to get us into the edge of the delta.

Here we arrived at our campsite at Bayou Segnette State Park, a quite and peaceful place. It was easy to find our booked camp site and hook up.

The time was 2:30 am, so straight to sleep.

I’ll get photos up asap, but its hard to find time on this tour to extend to photo sharing too. We’ll get there:-)

Can you direct me to what would be convenient for me to access info on you and Clare? I'll send a preview.

Your trip sounds great so far and I'm impressed with your alacrity with an RV in the US!!
